Dec 4, 2024 A Hope That Heals Addiction
One of the most beautiful things we can provide as Christians is a new definition of “hope.”
In the world, “hope” is used as a wish; the strength of the wish is based on the strength of the person’s desire.
In Christianity, we use the word “hope” completely differently.
For us, “hope” is the confident expectation that what God has promised will come to fruition; this hope’s strength relies in Him, not us. At the same time, this type of “hope” recognizes that things may not turn out as we wish but affirms that we will still trust His plan.
James learned just how powerful this new kind of hope was in his own life.
Growing up in a busy urban environment in Davao, Philippines, he struggled with addiction in his early adulthood, which led to broken relationships and a series of poor life choices.
His battles with addiction left him isolated and at rock bottom, seeking a way out but not knowing where to turn.
Despite attempts to find fulfillment in different places, James often felt empty inside, unsure of his purpose. Hopeless.
James first encountered the Bible through a friend who invited him to a local health and wellness event organized by a local Seventh-day Adventist church.
Initially, he was skeptical, thinking it was just another program about dieting or exercise. However, during the event, he found that the discussion was rooted in the deeper connection between physical health and spiritual well-being.
Intrigued, James joined a Bible study group afterward, where he felt welcomed and supported. Over time, the Word of God began to speak to him in ways he hadn’t experienced before, offering a new kind of hope and direction for his life.
Something that he had been trying to create for himself but never being able to find it.
One day, during his Bible studies, he learned about the story of the Prodigal Son. He related deeply to the son who had strayed far away but was welcomed back with open arms. James realized that despite his past mistakes, there was still hope for him, that God’s grace was greater than his failures.
In that moment, he decided to surrender his life to Jesus, and for the first time in years, he felt a genuine sense of freedom from his addiction, knowing that Christ could transform his life.
James is now actively involved in church ministry by supporting others who struggle with addiction. He also shares his testimony with people in recovery groups, showing them the power of God’s love to heal and restore the hope they can find in Him for their lives.
James has recently been baptized, and he has become a strong advocate for the holistic approach to health that the Seventh-day Adventist Church promotes. James’ transformation is evident not only in his personal life but also in how he helps others find the hope he found in Christ.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13
