Dec 17, 2025 A Sharecropper’s Awakening
For most of his life, sharecropper Oktovianus believed his days would rise and fall with the palm oil fields, until tragedy struck and God met him in his grief.
Living in the quiet village of Rantepacu, Indonesia far from his birthplace in Papua, Oktovianus settled into a simple rhythm of life.
He moved to the village in 1998 after marrying a woman from the community, building a family and working tirelessly to provide for them. Their wooden home, humble, crowded, but full of warmth, sheltered his children, his son-in-law, his grandson, and extended relatives who depended on the household’s generosity.
As a sharecropper on a palm oil plantation, Oktovianus worked the land daily, his hands weathered by years of labor. It was during this work that he formed an unexpected friendship with Tadius, the plantation owner and a member of the SDA Church.
Their conversations often drifted beyond crops and harvests. In the steady rhythm of those long days, Tadius began sharing the message of Jesus, softly, respectfully, and with genuine care.
Oktovianus listened, curious and open. Seeing this, Tadius introduced him to a QHM sponsored health missionary, believing that the seeds of faith had begun to grow. Their first meeting took place at the plantation owner’s home, where discussions turned to matters of life, purpose, and hope.
Not long after, a public evangelism event was scheduled in their village, Oktovianus attended eagerly, drawn to the messages and sensing something stirring in his heart. But behind his quiet attentiveness, he carried a heavy burden.
It was during a missionary visit to his home that the truth surfaced: just two weeks before the meetings, his wife had passed away. Her death had left a deep ache in the family. The house felt emptier, quieter, and the future more uncertain. Yet, even through the weight of loss, Oktovianus felt the unmistakable pull of God’s comfort.
For him, the timing of the meetings was not coincidence—it was compassion. A reminder that even in the darkest valleys, God sends messengers of hope.
Today, Oktovianus and his family study the Bible with growing dedication. Their evenings, once shadowed by sorrow, are now filled with prayer, Scripture reading, and conversations about faith. The same God who met a grieving sharecropper in the fields is now reshaping the story of his family.
Our prayer is that the Oktovianus and his family will continue walking toward Christ, finding healing, strength, and a renewed purpose in Him.
