Dec 22, 2025 God’s Indescribable Gift

The time of year when we celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas is, for many reasons, my favorite time of year.

For one, it’s a time set aside for family, whether by blood or by choice.

But above all, this season is the best because of Jesus.

Yes, Thanksgiving has passed, but that doesn’t mean the act of thankfulness can’t continue.

And yes, it is true that the presence and love of Jesus can be experienced year-round.

Yet, it is from Thanksgiving to Christmas that we focus on the wonderful gift of God, in giving His Son as a baby in Bethlehem.

There is a Bible verse that captures both Thanksgiving and Christmas well. It’s 2 Corinthians 9:15, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!”

“Thanks be to God,…” captures well the purpose of Thanksgiving. God’s “indescribable gift” highlights the purpose of Christmas. One verse, tying together two wonderful holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas!

J. John, in his little book, The Gift, gives us four reasons why God’s gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, is such an indescribable gift. Because God’s gift is personalpracticalpermanent, and purchased

God’s gift is personal, Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;…”

In Luke 15, Jesus shared three parables: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son. In each case, one was lost, but the one that was searched for was found and rejoiced over, in fact.

God cares about each one of His children, and His gift of Jesus Christ is personally for each and every individual in the world.

God’s gift is also practical

There are many practical items out there that should never be given as gifts. Such as a vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, or rice cooker (this is where I apologize to my dear wife for giving her a rice cooker in our first year of marriage as a gift; I am truly sorry).

And there are gifts that are not practical at all, pretty much useless. Like little cheap trinkets one may win at a white elephant game.

But God’s gift of His Son is a wonderful gift and very practical. When Jesus comes into our hearts, we are transformed. His grace changes us into people like Jesus, and His love flows through us to bless those around us.

God’s indescribable gift is also permanent. When you and I accept Jesus into our hearts, we receive life eternal. 1 John 5:12 states, “He who has the Son has life;…” We have eternal life with Jesus and with all those who love Jesus.

And finally, God’s gift is purchased. It cost God everything when He gave us His indescribable gift. “…you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold,… but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18, 19).

This holiday season, let us give thanks to God for His indescribable, personal, practical, permanent, and purchased gift of His precious Son, Jesus Christ. And let us give thanks by choosing to give our hearts to Jesus and be conduits of love and grace to those God puts in our path.
