Oct 29, 2025 How a Text Message Led to Baptism
It was a casual Wednesday evening, Maria, a QHM sponsored chaplain for The Raise the Trumpet radio station in Manado, Indonesia was winding down from her day, when the familiar WhatsApp notification dinged.
On her screen was a message from a woman named Siti, a Muslim woman living in Papua, a listener of the radio station.
Maria’s role as digital chaplain is to respond to listener questions, conduct house visitations (to those local) and provide Bible studies.
“Siti’s message was short and kind—she just wanted to ask how I was doing,” Maria explains. “I didn’t think much of it at first, but just a few days later, she reached out again. This time, her message carried a longing, a quiet search for something deeper. She asked if I could help guide her in understanding the Adventist faith and if I could share with her some simple prayers—because, she admitted, she didn’t know how to pray.”
From that day on, God began writing a story neither of them could have imagined.
“I started sending Siti short prayers, daily devotions, and passages from the book Maranatha. Each week, as Sabbath approached, I sent her a quote and a Bible verse to remind her of God’s rest and love. Though we lived far apart—she in Papua and I in Manado—our friendship grew through simple messages and phone calls.
“Over time, Siti began attending a church in her local area. She asked thoughtful questions about faith and the meaning of tithing, and I did my best to explain each one. Even from a distance, I could sense her heart opening to the truth.
“Ten months after our first conversation, I sent her a copy of The Great Controversy and encouraged her to read it with her Bible by her side. She did—and as she studied, the Holy Spirit continued to work in her heart.
“Then, a month after that, I received a message that filled me with joy.
“’Happy Sabbath,’ Siti wrote. Then she added softly, ‘Please pray for me—I’m going to be baptized today.’
“My heart overflowed with gratitude. Right then, we prayed together over a WhatsApp call—two believers miles apart, united by the same faith and the same God. That afternoon, in Papua, Siti was baptized.”
What began as a simple WhatsApp conversation became a journey of faith that led a searching heart into the arms of Christ.
A simple WhatsApp chat became the doorway to transformation. Maria never met Siti face to face, yet through Scripture, prayer, and the quiet work of the Holy Spirit, her life was changed forever.
It reminds us that the gospel isn’t limited by distance, culture, or circumstance. God’s love can travel across oceans, over mountains, and even through a phone screen. He meets people where they are—whether in a crowded city, a remote village, or in the quiet of a late-night message.
Siti’s story is a reminder that no effort to share Christ is ever wasted. A short prayer, a simple text, or a verse shared in faith can plant seeds that grow into eternity.
This is what grace looks like—God reaching out through ordinary people and everyday tools to bring His children home.
