Mar 31, 2020 Pastor Hugh Mighty is all in: Sharing Jesus in Cuba
Hugh Mighty serves as a chaplain in Florida. He is married with five children and several grandchildren. Before coming to Florida in 2016, he pastored in his home country of Jamaica, and Barbados. In March, Pastor Mighty joined his first QHM mission team. Here is his story.
In 2018, my friend Paul, a retired pastor, went on a QHM mission trip to the Philippines. When he got back, he shared how much he enjoyed his experience. A few months later, he asked if I could join a QHM mission trip. I was eager to go but, unfortunately, the trip I wanted to go on had to be rescheduled. So, it wasn’t until March of this year that I was finally able to go. I joined the mission team to Piln, Cuba.
In some sense, there are things about Cuba that are similar to Jamaica since it is a close neighboring island. The fruits and landscapes are similar to those in my home country and were very familiar to me. But lack of transportation was very different. And the people are especially friendly and we were welcomed by the community.
is found in warm and friendly residents.
What tremendous experience it was for me to preach for the meetings. I enjoyed sharing the My Friend Jesus evangelism series!
After each service, the people greeted me as they left. They were benefitting from the sermons and really thrilled to be at the meetings. Sometimes it was hard to express ourselves and communicate with each other, even through translation, but it was apparent that they were grateful we were there.
The involvement of the local church members was what really impressed me during this project. They were happy to be involved and did such an outstanding job of preparing. Because they don’t have transportation to bring them to church, most would have to walk every night if they wanted to attendÑand they did. The team evangelism effort was very effective.
Another thing was the health clinics. They were great. We saw hundreds of people over the course of several clinic days in different locations.
Many people were excited to get a pair of glasses. In Cuba, even if someone can find a pair, they likely can’t afford to buy it. You could tell from the joy on people’s faces that they were blessed by the readers we provided. We also did health screenings for diabetes and heart disease.
We prayed with many people at the clinic and asked them if they had prayer requests. One man we prayed with had never ever been to church before in his life until that day he came to the clinic.
The great thing was that the clinic really opened the door for the spiritual aspect. It was really cool to see clinics reach those people who otherwise would never come to meet Jesus. Clinics are an important way to draw people and to be able to pray with them and segue into a spiritual realm.
Despite having to leave early, we were surprised to discover that our local church partners had hats for every team member. We had such a bittersweet time taking pictures and praying together before we had to leave.
Sadly, we had to leave on Thursday due to the virus outbreak around the world. Our last clinic was planned for Friday morning, so we left the supplies for our church member partners. On our way home, we received the amazing news that more than 500 people showed up for that clinic!
I enjoyed serving in Piln and am really glad I went. It was a tremendous experience.

This spring, QHM has hit pause on international travel for the next few months. We are doing our part to stop the spread of the virus. Our office staff is working from home. But we remain in touch with our international partners and the work of spreading the gospel continues!
We also know that God is preparing people just like Pastor Mighty to share Jesus on a QHM mission trip as soon as possible. Is He calling you?
