Jan 8, 2020 Sidelined on Sabbath

Rosalie and Renaflor sat on the sidelines on baptism Sabbath watching as everyone else went in the water to publicly commit their lives to Jesus. It was the end of QHM’s evangelism meetings and the two had been so eager to be baptized during our mission team’s trip to The Philippines. That Sabbath, however, they were not joining the other new believers in the water.

The day before, team member, Jona Fe, and Pastor Dan Smith had talked with Rosalie and Renaflor, finding them prepared and very eager to give their hearts to Jesus through baptism. But there was a problem.

“You will NOT get baptized,” their husbands had declared, threatening that if they did, there would be in a great deal of trouble. The two young women were torn and filled with anxiety.

They shared their dilemma with Pastor Dan. “We don’t care what happens to us,” they told him. “We want to be baptized, we just can’t do this on Sabbath with everyone else. It’s too risky because our husbands will find out. Please, will you baptize us on Friday instead?” Of course, Pastor Dan was happy to do this for them.

Sabbath morning was full of joy and the two women were all smiles, although they were not taking part in the mass baptism. They welcomed their newly baptized friends into the family of God along with all their other brothers and sisters. And they were no longer worried. They knew that their husbands’ reactions to the news was in the hands of their new friend, Jesus!
