Oct 1, 2025 Simple Conversations in Secret
This is a story from one of our gospel workers who is working secretly in a country unfriendly to the Gospel, names have been changed to protect their identity.
“Wait—does this mean God Himself came to earth and died for us? And that it’s not His will for us to suffer?” Anna asked.
A year ago, a young woman named Anna walked into our Spanish conversation club. At thirty years old, she was a successful psychologist, confident, full of life, and surrounded by friends. She came from a religious (non-Christian) family but wasn’t particularly devout. At first glance, she didn’t seem like someone who would be searching for deeper spiritual meaning.
But God was already at work.
As we got to know Anna, she began accepting our invitations to join our Friday small group gatherings. To our surprise, she didn’t just come once—she kept coming. Slowly, her interest grew. She asked questions, listened carefully, and wanted to learn more about God. Eventually, we gave her a Bible, Steps to Christ, and a set of Thus Says the Bible lessons.
Not long ago, Anna and her friend Sarah (also from a non-Christian background) wanted to dive deeper into the topic of purpose. My husband, who pastors and studies ways of connecting with non-Christians about Christ, led a special study with them.
During the discussion, they explained their belief that everything—both good and bad—happens by the will of their god. My husband gently opened the Scriptures to show them something different: that God never intended suffering for this world. Evil came through human choice, not God’s desire. Yet, out of love, God came to earth Himself, died for our sins, and redeemed us.
When Anna and Sarah realized this, their faces lit up in amazement.
“Wait—does this mean God Himself came to earth and died for us? And that it’s not His will for us to suffer?” Anna asked.
“Yes,” we explained. “That is exactly the Good News.”
The Holy Spirit’s presence was palpable in that room. Both girls asked for another meeting. Since then, we’ve been praying for them, walking patiently alongside them, and trusting God’s Spirit to lead their hearts step by step.
Around the same time, another visitor joined our conversation club—Samuel, also thirty, a professional musician. He considered himself a part of a different Christian denomination and enjoyed yoga, but he quickly became friends with our volunteers and began attending our Friday gatherings.
Samuel was inquisitive, cheerful, and eager to learn. He invited us into his home, and one evening, as we talked late into the night, he began asking deep questions about the Bible. That conversation stretched until two in the morning!
Soon after, we gave him a Bible, Steps to Christ, and the Thus Says the Bible lessons as well. To our joy, we later discovered that he was not only reading the Bible daily but even quoting passages from memory. His questions continued, and eventually, he also joined the study group with Anna and Sarah.
Samuel still enjoys yoga and continues to identify as Christian, but his hunger for truth keeps bringing him back. Week after week, he joins the small group, asks questions, and engages with Scripture. And we keep praying that God will reveal Himself more deeply to his heart.
Looking back, none of us could have predicted how God would move through something as simple as a conversation club. What began with casual friendships has become a journey of discovery, faith, and transformation.
Anna, Sarah, and Samuel are still on their paths, each at a different place. But one thing is clear: God is drawing them to Himself, patiently and lovingly. And we are grateful to witness it, trusting that the Holy Spirit will continue the work He has already begun.
