Oct 22, 2025 The Sickness That Saved Him

Deep in the Amazon jungle, in a village called Tiquie, Domingo was in tremendous pain.

His community tried everything they could to help ease his suffering, but quickly, they ran out of options.

So, he had to make the difficult decision and leave his friends and family behind, cross through country borders, and seek medical treatment at the nearest facility, which happened to be in Mitú, Colombia.

After multiple exams, the doctors couldn’t diagnose him. So, he was forced to stay for observation to continue to monitor his condition.

Eventually, the doctors felt he was stable enough to be transferred to a facility specifically for people who come from far away and seek treatment but still need to be close by in case they need more care.

While Domingo lay in his bed, wondering why this was happening to him and missing his home and family, the district pastor in Mitú was getting into the mototaxi donated by QHM to visit the sick.

The district pastor had been coming to the facility frequently and hosting meetings with residents who were interested.

When Domingo first met the pastor, he seemed indifferent to the meetings, but as the days passed, the pastor approached him again and asked about his culture and language. That small act of kindness opened a door to Domingo’s heart.

At the next meeting, Domingo quietly joined, sitting in the back to listen. At the end of the meeting, the pastor offered Bible studies afterward. Domingo said he was supposed to leave soon since the pain had subsided.

But with no set discharge date, he agreed to start Bible studies until it was time for him to go home.

A week passed, and the doctor told him it was necessary to stay in the city longer because they wanted to perform more in-depth checkups and monitor his progress.

What started as something meant to help pass the time for a few days before he was due to be discharged turned into three months, which gave Domingo the perfect amount of time to finish the course and decide to get baptized.

While he remained in the city, he attended church and made friends with the Church family.

When he was finally able to return home, Domingo carried more than healing in his body — he carried salvation in his heart. Now back in Tiquié, he joyfully shares with his family and neighbors how God used a mysterious illness to lead him to Jesus.
